New Red Holsteins and Red Carriers in HG line-up
Colourful harvest

With two Red Holstein sires and a Red Carrier added to the active line-up, HG enjoyed a colourful November harvest.

The November proofs brought a number of reinforcements to HG’s Red Holstein line-up. The newcomers, along with the established sires from the HG line-up, are offering dairymen a wide choice for improving farm profitability.

Sons of Giny
Topspeed Jatra-Red (88 DPS) is the second son of the VG89 Celsius daughter and ’Star Brood Cow’ Topspeed Giny to be added to the active Red Holstein line-up. Jatra combines a high milk production proof (+1,591kg) with good overall conformation figures (107 Total Score). As a Jerom son, it is no surprise Jatra has a particularly good score for frame (107). His daughters are tall, deep-bodied cows with wide sloping rumps.
Topspeed Laarman-Red (132 DPS), Jatra’s brother by Cocktail 17, was a new addition from the August proofs. He combines a production proof of over 1,200kgs of milk and high fat with good overall conformation figures (107). Topspeed Giny is also the dam of no. 4 Red Holstein sire Topspeed Gogo, who unfortunately is not alive anymore, but is being used heavily as a sire of sons in HG’s Red Holstein breeding program.

Senior
Topspeed Delta Senior-Red is another breeding product from the Topspeed Syndicate but from a different cow family, the Sientjes. He is a son of Topindex Martinus and out of a Lord Lily dam who was evaluated in the Delta nucleus herd. A very short gestation length and his calves being small at birth result in a breeding value of 110 for calving ease, which makes Senior one of the most extreme calving sires in the breed for this trait. His daughters are good-sized, deep-bodied cows with good udders that are producing high component milk with very low somatic cell counts.

Top DPS
The two highest available sires on the Red Holstein DPS-list are Kian-Red and Lowlands Fabian-Red. Now with more than 11,000 second crop daughters milking, Kian added another 12 euros with a plus on production and durability, and strengthened his number one position at 219 DPS. This farmer satisfaction sire is still in high demand and is popular among both red and black and white Holstein breeders. Strong points are his high components (+0.51% F; +0.28% P), calving ease status (107), good udder health (102) and daughter fertility (102) figures and excellent feet and legs transmission (110). The daughters of Fabian (187 DPS), the son of reigning Dutch Red Holstein Champion Flora EX91, are just starting to calve for the second time. Fabian has many things in common with Kian (high components, calving ease and health traits), but in his type transmission his strength lies with udders.

In her first lactation Lowlands Fabian daughter Gusta 117 (MGS: Stadel) is projected to 2.06 305d 7,702kg M 6.04% F 4.09% P 108LV

Red Carriers
With the two world-class Sparta sons Delta Canvas RF (172 DPS) and Delta Lionel RF (152 DPS), and Manders Marius RF (160 DPS), one of the highest ranking Addison sons, HG already had a number of red carriers in the line-up that can add a splash of colour to the Holstein breed.
A new addition is Lowlands Prescot RF (72 DPS), who is a red carrying Cello son from a Sparta dam. Prescot, whose VG88 Sunny Boy granddam is not far off reaching the 100-tonne lifetime yield mark, is a fitness specialist with positive scores for all health and management traits. He is also a calving ease sire with a balanced production proof and level components. Prescot’s type figures show good scores for all composite traits. In particular, he adds slope and width to rumps, and he breeds tall cows with well-attached, shallow udders.

Lowlands Prescot RF daughter Marjola 46 VG85-2yr (MGS: Carousel Sierra)
Prod: 2.02 305d (proj.) 8,986kg M 4.12% F 3.53% P 112LV

New BW Marshall
Mr Rickland Luppy CRI-ET is a new Bellwood Marshall son and from the very successful cross with Patron. He is backed by five generations of VG or EX dams. His dam is Duncan Patron Linda VG86, who is out of a VG87 Aerostar dam and the next dam is an EX93 Chief Mark. Luppy is an udder (109) and feet and legs (108) specialist, who breeds strong, wide cows that are very persistent producers. Luppy can be used on maiden heifers and shows good figures for udder health.

Components and fitness
In Newhouse Ricky (131 DPS) and Delta Onedin (137 DPS), HG offers two sires for dairy farmers who are looking to add more profitability to their herd by lifting the components and at the same time improving the fitness traits of their cows. Newhouse Ricky breeds late maturing cows with good conformation. He ranks among the highest active sires for udder health (104) and daughter fertility (102). Delta Onedin is a high component calving ease sire who breeds medium-sized, robust cows with a lot of width.

Long time favourite
The same family that produced Delta Onedin, the Art-Acres Tex’s, is also the source of the very popular Jocko son Delta Paramount (134 DPS) and our long time favourite Art-Acres Win 395 (123 DPS). Win 395 will soon start adding second crop daughters. His test daughters have now completed three lactations and have demonstrated that they are very persistent producers that improve with age. For improving the mobility of your cows, Win 395 is an obvious choice as he is one of the best for legs and feet at 110. The same can be said about Paramount, who has exactly the same score for this important trait and finds himself among the top udder bulls at 111. Those who are milking test daughters by Paramount have praised their persistency and the ease with which they move around in freestall barns. •
